In 2015, all non-profit organisations operating in the tourism industry merged within the new visit.brussels structure.  visit.brussels will now be the sole player for the development of Brussels tourist proposals and marketing.

Thanks to the MICE and the 442 conventions they bring, Brussels leads the European Union and ranks second globally as a convention destination. In four years, overnight hotel stays have increased by 40%, to surpass the nearly 7 million mark in 2014, 53% of which derive from business travel. Leisure travel also expanded, going from 41% of total overnight stays in 2000, or 1.91 million, to 47.3%, or 3.13 million, in 2014.

The region has undeniably become a prized city-break destination, especially thanks to its cultural dynamism and special events.

The cultural sector, which currently represents 24,000 employees and 2,700 independent contractors, is also an essential source of economic growth and employment expansion for Brussels, and visit.brussels reiterates its desire to participate in the dissemination of cultural content throughout the Brussels Region.

With its new strategic plan, Brussels is setting itself the ambitious goal of 10 million overnight stays by 2020. visit.brussels will pursue its affinity strategy and its plan boasts several innovations. New affinity themes will be developed, such as theatre, diversity, geek culture, etc.

With its new plan, visit.brussels also affirms its desire to develop tourism in all of Brussels communities.

It prides itself on developing tourism that is respectful of residents.  The visit.brussels’ strategic plan also intends to place special emphasis on “tourism for all” in order that the city might be fully accessible to everyone, especially those living with a handicap.

The plan which was recently presented to the media and tourism industry players has been developed in recent months in close collaboration with the economic, cultural, and social players that will now have permanent representation on the visit.brussels strategic committee, empowered to set the association’s strategic action agenda.

The 2016 “be welcome, be.brussels” Strategic Plan is available online in French or Dutch

3. The sewers museum : an unusual trip into a very hidden side of Brussels

The Sewers Museum invites you on an unusual trip into a very hidden side of Brussels but which is absolutely vital for the running of the city. And unlike other museums, this one is active, with the River Senne playing the leading role.

The Museum lies between the two former customs pavilions of the Porte d'Anderlecht/Anderlechtsepoort. One is now the entrance and the other is the exit ! Between the two, a ride of about 50 metres through one of the gates of the River Senne, and then into the main sewer under Chaussée de Mons/Bergensesteenweg , provides a practical overview of what goes on in the 400 km of Brussels' sewers, which are usually known only for their visible elements (drains and curbstones).

This living museum immerses the visitor in real conditions. But this place is much more than a surprising walk into the bowels of the city. With the help of scale models, films, objects and commentaries, the Museum gives visitors a thorough picture of the history of the River Senne. They are told of the work done in this underground world, how the sewers were made, the daily struggle against flooding and the dangers of the job. The visit ends with a reminder of the water cycle and of the city's ecology.

Group visits : up to 20 visitors/group.
The museum can also be rent for private events. Terms on request.

#CallBrussels !

The #CallBrussels campaign, which took place between January 7 and 11, aimed at convincing the tourists that Brussels is still a destination of choice.

Over the past few weeks, the international medias have portrayed Brussels as a war zone that tourists would do well to avoid. This obviously had direct consequences for the tourist sector which is currently experiencing a noticeable decline. Yet life goes on, and the European capital is as packed as ever with tourist and cultural activities. With the international #CallBrussels campaign, visit.brussels aims at convincing tourists intending to visit Brussels that there is no reason to revise their travel plans.

In order to foster exchanges between the main players of tourism in Brussels - namely tourists from the following countries : France, the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain - and the people of Brussels, visit.brussels set up telephone boxes in three emblematic locations of the Brussels-Capital Region. Passers-by were able to answer questions from foreign tourists, who could choose which telephone box to call via the website www.call.brussels, and a webcam filmed the surroundings. The interactions were broadcasted live on the website www.call.brussels.

The campaign will be followed by the international release of the video clips shot during the action, via social media and through the purchasing of media space on websites in priority countries.

The #CallBrussels campaign is an initiative by the Brussels-Capital Region, organized by visit.brussels with the support of Toerisme Vlaanderen and Wallonie-Bruxelles Tourisme.
