Dada – Between Madness and Nonsense
2016 marks not only the centenary of Dada, but also the 20th anniversary of the Festspiele Zürich. On June 3, 2016, the family-run firm, tibits, is opening a restaurant in the middle of the up-and-coming Zürich-Nord quarter. It is the first restaurant in Oerlikon serving exclusively vegetarian fare. From morning through to late evening, tibits offers a delicious and healthy selection of over 40 freshly prepared dishes. IRONMAN 70.3 Switzerland is once again guesting in Rapperswil-Jona and this year celebrates its 10th anniversary. On Sunday, June 5, over 2,600 athletes will be competing in a triathlon over 70.3 miles. Top Swiss triathletes, Daniela Ryf and Nicola Spirig, will also be taking part. Spectators can treat themselves to culinary delights at the various food stands or wander at their leisure through the Exposition. On June 10 & 11, the Swiss lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community will once more be flying the flag at the Zurich Pride Festival on the Kasernenareal. In hopefully pleasant temperatures, acts such as the Vengaboys will take to the stage and turn up the heat with their lively performances. With a touch of glamor, Alaska Thunderfuck (Ru Paul’s Drag Race) is guaranteed to get fans dancing. Of course, there is also plenty of entertainment, infotainment, food and drink. Everyone is welcome – including to the large demonstration march through the inner city on the Saturday afternoon. All the events over the entire weekend are free of charge. The blues’n’jazz festival, held from June 23–26, presents 25 concerts on three different stages in the Town of Roses, situated on Lake Zurich. The musical fireworks display will be set off on Open Air Thursday by Joss Stone, with her magnificent voice and immense stage presence. The main acts on the Friday and Saturday are Patent Ochsner, Philipp Fankhauser, Robert Randolph, The Mannish Boys and Lil’ Ed. This year, the blues’n’jazz festival again promises to live up to its name – although that does not prevent the organizers from presenting musicians from other genres, too. Manifesta is the only roving biennial of contemporary art. From Rotterdam to Frankfurt to San Sebastian and St. Petersburg – its journey has taken it all over Europe. Between June and September, Manifesta 11 will be guesting in Zurich. Featuring 130 artists, a floating pavilion and 38 parallel events, Manifesta venues and activities are scattered all over the city. Under theme of “What People Do for Money: Some Joint Ventures”, artists from all over the world are getting together with representatives of Zurich-based occupations. Catalan artist Carles Congost, for example, is working with the Zurich Fire Department to produce a film, “Simply the Best”, which addresses the difference between a job as a vocation or simply a means of earning money. Maurizio Cattelan is collaborating with a Paralympic athlete, while Marguerite Humeau has entered into a joint venture with a robotics engineer. Also among the artists participating is French author Michel Houellebecq, who has teamed up with a doctor to present Manifesta visitors with a meticulous evaluation of his health.Learn More
